When the Hummingbirds Return

© Doug Spears 2010

I feel a hard wind rollin' down off Tucker mountain,

All the firewood that's been gathered, split and cured to burn,

This cold and bitter season just hastens on your leavin',

I hope I'll see you when the hummingbirds return.

Springtime lays so soft here on this valley,

Gentle summer breezes seemed to satisfy all yearn,

But when the river's edge is freezin' it puts you in a mind for leavin',

I hope I'll see you when the humingbirds return.

You're going where the sun warms love and life's chilling winters,

Where the changing of the seasons gives no cause for concern,

You're following to where the blooms are full of sweetest nectar,

Such a simple lesson but one that's so hard learned,

I hope I'll see you when the hummingbirds return.

On a clear night I can swear that I see heaven,

The touch of your hand still sets my soul to churn,

But there's a cool breath in your laughter as we turn another chapter,

I hope I'll see you when the hummingbirds return.

You're going where the sun warms love and life's chilling winters,

Where the changing of the seasons brings no cause for concern,

You're following to where the blooms are full of sweetest nectar,

Such a simple lesson but one that's so hard learned,

I hope I'll see you when the hummingbirds return.

I hope I'll see you when the hummingbirds return.

I Wish
©2010 Doug Spears

Oh I wish I could remember all the faces that I've seen,
All the creases, lines and wrinkles full of life lived in between,
But you know I do remember every shape of your smile,
The smile that hid such sadness so hard to reconcile.

Oh I wish, Oh I wish,
Oh I wish I could remember you right back into my life.

And I wish I could remember all the voices that I've heard,
Voices singing from the heart in strong and simple words,
But you know I do remember the very texture of your laugh,
A laugh that echoes from your eyes in treasured photographs.

Oh I wish, Oh I wish,
Oh I wish I could remember you right back into my life.

And I'm living with the memory of all the times I
      thought we'd share,
And how I might have kept you here if only I had
      dared.

And I wish I could remember all the tears that I've cried,
Tears of joy and sorrow, tears that had no reason why,
But you know I do remember the tears of your goodbye,
Tears that stain my broken heart and never seem to dry.

Oh I wish, Oh I wish,
Oh I wish I could remember you right back into my life.

Oh I wish, Oh I wish,
I wish I could remember you back into my life.

Sinner’s Song
© Douglas C.  Spears 2007

Saw him hudled ‘neath the depo stairs, still wet from last night’s rain,
He crossed himself in silent prayer while quietly he sang . . .

Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song,
I’m still short some stranger’s change that keeps me movin’ on,
Help me sing with heart and soul ‘til all my words are gone,
Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song.

Lord the early morning air is damp and cold against this wall,
They look right through me as they pass, now and then a coin will fall,
I can hear the diesels humming now, my coach will soon be gone,
To take me on the road again to somewhere else that I don’t belong.

They never knew just where I’d gone, I never told ‘em why,
For some the truth might set ‘em free, for some the truth’s a lie,
Fences can’t be mended now, those tears have all run dry,
What’s done is done and past is past, best just leave it ly. .

Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song,
I’m still short some stranger’s change that keep’s me movin’ on,
Help me sing with heart and soul ‘til all my words are gone,
Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song.

If saints and sinners ever dance,
If a fallen angel gets a second chance,
I’ll sing this song of penitence,
        To open heaven’s doors.

There’s little pity for the wayward and the weak,
I’ve got no reason left to hide and noone left to seek,
The bitter taste of wasted years still chokes me in my sleep,
Loneliness is all I’ve sown and lonely’s all I’ll reap.

Jesus, Mary, Joseph help me sing this sinner’s song.

Two Graves

©2010 Doug Spears

When the 20's were roarin' life in the Glades,

Was a life lived on plenty the best of all days,

Belle Glade and Pahokee were home to hired hands,

Good men and women who toiled on the land.

Each day in the sun their strong backs they'd bend,

Over rich fields that seemed to run on without end,

And for their trouble a wage they were paid,

From the sweat of their labor vast fortunes were made, and

Two graves, two graves,

Even in death hate has no shame,

So they laid them all down in two separate graves.

In '28 came a terrible blow,

Across the big water the waves they did grow,

No earthen dike could stem the wild tide,

Where devil's desire and fate did collide.

Terrified eyes lashed by the wind,

From trees and rooftops saw the horrible grin,

Of the great roaring monster, a foaming black flow,

That pulled thousands down to a dark death below, in

Two graves, two graves,

Even in death hate has no shame,

So they laid them all down in two separate graves.

When the great storm had passed Okeechobee's black mud,

Was strewn with the dead drowned in the flood,

The vultures soon circled above the foul smell,

As the bodies lay swelling in a hot humid hell.

Now boys you go gather and those you return,

Some we will bury and some we will burn,

Betters remembered with marble so white,

Lessers forgotten black as the night, in

Two graves, two graves,

Even in death hate has no shame,

So they laid them all down in two separate graves.

Now the land is well healed and the dikes rise again,

But the dead they still linger in a shadow of sin,

The price that was paid that terrible night,

Was the same price for all rich, poor, black or white, but

Two graves, two graves,

Even in death hate has no shame,

So they laid them all down in two separate graves.

Yes they laid them all down in two separate graves.

Crescent City Lament

©Doug Spears 2010

I went down to the old Cresent City,

To hear the Quarter roar again,

To feel that gritty heartbeat down along Bourbon Street,

That's got a a bite like bathtub gin,

But the jazz and the blues got drowned in cheap booze,

While in the distance a church bell rings,

And oh how the mighty have fallen,

When love just laughs at the King.

I saw a skinny girl down a dark side street,

Blowing a sweet saxophone,

The notes fell like tears on mostly deaf ears,

But that tune broke my heart like a stone,

In a pool of street light ignored by the night,

Ya gotta wonder why the caged bird sings,

And oh how the mighty have fallen,

When love just laughs at the King.

Well things may look the same but there's a sorrow and shame,

Behind the dark windows and the boarded up doors,

The soul of the song got out shown by neon,

Karaoke's what passes for art any more.

I found an old man down on Jackson,

Painting pictures of the things he sees,

Oh he seemed to have a touch with the colors and such,

So I asked if he'd paint one of me,

When I saw what he drew so simple and true,

I felt an old familiar sting,

And oh how the mighty have fallen,

When love just laughs at the King..

And oh how the mighty have fallen,

When love just laughs at the King.

As the Crow Flies

©2010 Doug Spears

I thought I knew just where I was going when I started down this road,

But it seems like maybe I’ve gotten lost or maybe lost control,

I know I came just the way I planed, but now there’s nothing I recognize,

Still looking back inside my head it just doesn’t seem that far,

As the crow flies.

Well if I’d known then what I know now it still wouldn’t be enough,

‘Cause the only thing I’ve really learned is that this road can get so rough,

I thought it through, every detail down, but somewhere I compromised,

Still looking back now inside my head it just doesn’t seem that far,

As the crow flies.

Oh as the crow flies there’s nothing but horizon,

All sense of time and distance fall away,

And as the crow flies there’s just no denying,

That what you thought was black and white was just shades of gray,

            As the crow flies.

So with tired hands wrapped ‘round a coffee cup I pick at loose threads in my scheme,

It seemed so easy at the start, an all too common theme,

But seasons change and colors fade, time strips off all disguise,

And when I look back inside my head it still doesn’t seem that far,

As the crow flies.

Oh as the crow flies there’s nothing but horizon,

All sense of time and distance fall away,

And as the crow flies there’s just no denying,

That what you thought was solid gold is just simple clay,

            As the crow flies.

            As the crow flies.

These Rocks

© Doug Spears 2010

Oh these rocks here in the shallows,

May not seem like they're good for anything,

But I love these rocks here in the shallows,

Cause it's the rocks that make the river sing.

When I go walking down by the river,

Sometimes I wade that cold mountain flow,

My feet uncertain, I trip and stumble,

On that rough and rocky river bed below.

Cause these rocks here in the shallows,

May not seem like they're good for anything,

But I love these rocks here in the shallows,

Cause it's the rocks that make the river sing.

Where the bottom's smooth and sandy oh it runs so quiet through,

But where it swirls around the rocks that's when the river speaks to you

This life we're livin' is like the river,

The force of nature sets its course and flow,

We trip and stumble in life's shallows,

Searching for the deeper answers we may never know.

Cause these rocks here in the shallows,

May not seem like they're good for anything,

But I love these rocks here in the shallows,

Cause it's the rocks that make the river sing.

Cause it's the rocks that make the river sing.

There's Always a Middle

Lyrics

There’s Always a Middle

©2009 Doug Spears

Well between two sides there’s always a middle,

Some give a lot, some take a little,

Really pretty simple, not a big riddle,

But we always make it so hard,

To see the other side of the puzzle,

Between here and there always looks like trouble,

Jumping in the water is a constant struggle,

If you won’t let down your guard.

Way back, it all goes way back,

Long as I can remember back,

            That’s how it’s always been,

It was a worn down track

Before Jill tumbled down after Jack,

Before David pulled a rock from a sack,

            Seems it never ends.

Now brown against yellow, black against white,

Strong against weak, wrong against right,

Everybody’s out there looking for a fight,

And nobody ever wins,

You might win a battle but you’ll lose the war,

‘Cause you can’t remember what you’re fighting for,

You think you have less and you’ve gotta have more,

So it starts all over again.

Way back, it all goes way back,

Long as I can remember back,

            That’s how it’s always been,

It was a worn down track

Before Jill tumbled down after Jack,

Before David pulled a rock from a sack,

            Seems it never ends.

Now a hand reaches out farther than a fist,

It’s a subtle point so often missed,

You never get nothing without a little risk,

And sometimes you’re gonna fail.

When you think you know it all there’s just no way out,

‘Cause being human is largely doubt,

Between going with and going without,

There’s a much better traveled trail.

Way back, it all goes way back,

Long as I can remember back,

            That’s how it’s always been,

It was a worn down track

Before Jill tumbled down after Jack,

Before David pulled a rock from a sack,

            Seems it never ends.

Well between two sides there’s always a middle . . .
