Break Some Stones ©2007, Doug Spears There’s tears I’ve held inside me, tears I should have cried so long ago, And my heart can grown so heavy, hardened by the things I won’t let show, And there’s stains around the edges of my memories that just won’t let go. You gotta break some stones to get the water to flow, Out of that river runnin’ deep below, Ain’t nothin’ comes easy if its worth your time, You’re gonna damned sure regret it if you don’t even try. Now there’s friends that I have chosen and then there are those friends who’ve chosen me, Sometimes the laughter came too easy and sometimes the liquor flowed just a bit too free, And the good times I thought would surely never end were shorter than they seemed. Bridge: Old men live on memories while young men live on dreams, And that river runnin’ deep inside is what carries you between. Now all the roads I’ve traveled slowly seem to fade to black and white, Signs that point in all directions leave me guessing at the wrong and at the right, But this river flowing deep down inside of me always leads me to the light. You gotta break some stones to get the water to flow, From that hidden river runnin’ deep below, Ain’t nothin’ comes easy if its worth your time, You’re gonna damned sure regret it if you don’t even try.

The One Not There ©2007 Doug Spears Sunshine’s almost forgotten here, Can’t remember where we were this time that summer, But I do remember bitter tears, and fears, Of the storm clouds and the thunder, Choices made and bridges burned, Doubt can make you lie awake and wonder. In the pictures of your children, Do you see the shadow of the one not there, Sometimes I try so hard to listen, For a voice that’s whispered softly like a prayer, Healing leaves a scar sometimes, Traces of the pain that’s not forgotten. Now the road to hell is paved with good intentions, And there’s a price to pay for our choices that we bear, There is no going back, no absolution, Just the haunting shadow of the one not there. Sometimes in the morning, When the dew lies soft like diamonds on the grass, As you stand there at the window, Do you glimpse a faint reflection in the glass, No right to judge, no one to blame, No consolation for an aching conscience. Now the road to hell is paved with good intentions, There’s a price to pay for our choices that we bear, There is no going back, no absolution, Just the haunting shadow of the one not there. Sunshine’s almost forgotten here, Can’t remember where we were this time that summer, But I do remember bitter tears, and fears, Of the storm clouds and the thunder, Healing leaves a scar sometimes, Traces of the pain that’s not forgotten. Not Forgotten . . . Don’t you wonder . . .

A Lie Is So Expensive ©2007 Doug Spears You know a lie is so expensive, When the truth is so damned cheap, You’ve been working yourself so hard, To get yourself in too deep, Now you’re tongue’s on fire, But it’s cold too the touch, Why do you keep on telling these lies, When they hurt you so much. Lie, lie, lie, Lord you know it’s sin, But these lies keep rolling off your tongue, Just like a rattlesnake sheds it’s skin, And it’ll make you moan, Like a warm dream of desire, Nut when you wake up you’re gonna find, That warmth is just your soul on fire. Oh you can lie to yourself ‘til you think its true But when they find out you’re a lie you’re gonna be through, Then what will you do. Because you’re lying in the morning, Straight on through to the afternoon, You keep lying in the evening, And the morning comes around too soon, And in the dead of the night, While you’re lying all alone, You’re gonna find the truth is skin deep, But a lie will cut you straight to the bone. Oh you can lie to yourself ‘til you think its true But when they find out you’re a lie you’re gonna be through, Then what will you do. You know a lie is so expensive, When the truth is so damned cheap, You’ve been working yourself so hard, To get yourself in too deep, Now you’re tongue’s on fire, But it’s cold too the touch, Why do you keep on telling these lies, When they hurt you so much.

Sinner’s Song © Douglas C. Spears 2007 Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song, I’m still short some stranger’s change that keeps me movin’ on, Help me sing with heart and soul ‘til all my words are gone, Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song. You know there’s little pity for the wayward and the weak, I’ve got no reason left to hide and noone left to seek, The bitter taste of wasted years still chokes me in my sleep, Loneliness is all I’ve sown and lonely’s all I’ll reap. They never knew just where I’d gone, I never told ‘em why, For some the truth might set ‘em free, for some the truth’s a lie, Fences can’t be mended now, those tears have all run dry, What’s done is done and past is past, best just leave it ly. . Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song, I’m still short some stranger’s change that keep’s me movin’ on, Help me sing with heart and soul ‘til all my words are gone, Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song. If saints and sinners ever dance, If a fallen angel gets a second chance, I’ll sing this song of penitence, Outside heaven’s doors. Lord the early morning air is damp and cold against this wall, They look right through me as they pass, now and then a coin will fall, I can hear the diesels humming now, my coach will soon be gone, To take me on the road again to somewhere else that I don’t belong. Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song, I’m still short some stranger’s change that keep’s me movin’ on, Help me sing with heart and soul ‘til all my words are gone, Jesus, Mary, Joseph , help me sing this sinner’s song. Jesus, Mary, Joseph help me sing this sinner’s song.

Do You ©2007 Doug Spears Do you love the thunder, Do you call the lightning your friend, Do you feel the rain fall down, Like it’ll never fall again, Do you smell the wonder of it all, On the breath of the evening wind. Do you hear the laughter, Do you feel it rise up from your soul, Do you see with childlike eyes, Even through your eyes so old, Do you seek the courage of the heart, In all stories you’ve been told. Do you climb the mountains just to see the other side, Do you chose to the rocky road when there’s smoother one’s to ride, Do you swim the horizon while the others drift the tide, Do you seize the day, come what may. Do you taste the hunger, Do you feel it dry upon your lips, Do you quench that thirst with wine, Dripped from a lover’s finger tips, Do you know the burning of desire, And surrender to its grip.

One Last Selfish Act ©2007 Doug Spears Now the good book says it’s a mortal sin, For a tortured heart and a soul worn too thin, No doubt about it it’s a cryin shame, That the livin’ get left to bear the blame. Just one brief instant, no time to take it back, Nothing left but the dark stains of that one last selfish act. No solace in this vengeful pride, Shattered hearts left swept aside, Washed to the sea on a river of fears, Ashes to ashes and tears to tears. Its over in a moment, no point in looking back, Nothing left but the dark stains of that one last selfish act. Don’t tell me ‘bout your troubles, its time you faced the fact, There just is no excusing this pointless self attack, You pulled your hand back from that throttle and let the scene fade out to black, And there’s nothing left but the dark stains of that one last selfish act. No man no brother no father no son, And when the dam breaks down you can’t stop the flood, Burn all the bridges ‘tween heaven and hell, Steal all the pennies from the wishin’ well. Step off into the darkness, there is no turning back Nothing left but the dark stains of that one last selfish act. You pulled your hand back from that throttle and let the scene fade out to black, And there’s nothing left but the dark stains of that one last selfish act, That One Last Selfish Act.

I Wasn’t There ©2007 Doug Spears I’ve got pictures in my mind, God how I wish my mind were blind, I see you dancing, romancing, Held in arms that are not mine. I wasn’t there, not in your heart, your mind or soul, I wasn’t there the night your passion took control, And now I bear the pain of these waking dreams, Of all the things you were feeling when I wasn’t there. My hands are shaking as my heart’s breaking, These scenes keep playing in my brain, I see you laughing, your eyes flashing, Playing scenes with a lover when I wasn’t there I wasn’t there when your heart cried out for me, I wasn’t there and Lord I’d left you so in need, I wasn’t there and now my heart just can’t break free, Of the pain that I know belongs to me. Now I’ve got pictures in my mind, God how I wish my mind were blind, I see you dancing, romancing, Held in arms that are not mine. I wasn’t there, not in your heart, your mind or soul, I wasn’t there the night your passion took control, And now I bear the pain of these waking dreams, Of all the things you were feeling when I wasn’t there. There was so much you were feeling when I wasn’t there.

Colors ©2007 Doug Spears I’ve got a favorite shade of blue, One that reminds me of you, The blue you wore on that first day, The day you stole my heart away, And I’ve got a favorite shade of green, Emerald from your wedding ring, Sparkles bright just like your eyes, The eyes that made me realize, You’re all the colors of my rainbow, Every shade and gentle hue, There’s an endless pallette on love’s easel, And every color there is you. Early Spring and high white feather clouds On the day we said our wedding vows, More than 20 years passed since that day, Hope you don’t regret the choice you made. And there’s the yellow of that dress you wore, The night we stayed and danced ‘til four, Made love under a silver moon, Amazing how that night seemed to end too soon. Shades of grey and black and white, That’s all I saw before you shined your light, And painted colors on my heart. And there’s the red of the gown you wear, To let me know its time to share, A tender kiss and gentle touch, Show me all those colors I love so much You’re all the colors of my rainbow, Every shade and gentle hue, There’s an endless pallette on love’s easel, And every color there is you.

There’s a Secret in This House ©2007 Doug Spears There’s a secret in this house, evil even here, Stains upon this hallowed ground like a cancer spread by fear, There’s a secret in this house, words you cannot say, Guilt and anger, hurt and shame that’s carried every day, From the secret in this house. Now a wolf came in sheep’s clothing, The boy’s were only twelve years old, Behind a robe of faith and love, Hid a tortured and twisted soul, And their innocense was taken, In a sacrifice to lust, They’ll burn in hell if they ever tell, Simply no one they can trust, With the secret in this house. There’s a secret in this house, evil even here, Stains upon this hallowed ground like a cancer spread by fear, There’s a secret in this house, words you cannot say, Guilt and anger, hurt and shame that’s carried every day, From the secret in this house. So where was the God of mercy, where was the God who cares, Where was the God that promised us when we cried out he’d be there, It’s in all the local papers Lord it’s headline breaking news, And all those years spent covering up have now simply lit the fuse, On the secret in this house. There’s a secret in this house, evil even here, Stains upon this hallowed ground like a cancer spread by fear, There’s a secret in this house, words you cannot say, Guilt and anger, hurt and shame that’s carried every day, From the secret in this house. So now a lawyer’s gonna make some money, And the Church will call for prayer, While innocence lost long ago, Still cries out in despair, Of the secret in this house. There’s a secret in this house, There’s a secret in this house.

Where Do We Go From Here ©2007 Doug Spears The limbs of that old oak tree were an invitation to climb, That two young souls out for adventure just could not decline, Higher and higher ‘til we thought that we could touch the sky, But what goes up must then come down, Fear filled our eyes as we stared at the ground and said . . . Where do we go from here, Where do we go from here, When its not as easy as it first appeared, Tell me where do we go from here, Tell me where do we go from here. Duty and honor weigh heavy on shoulders so young, We got jobs, we got wives, we got families so much to be done, Too focused on winning the race to know which race we’d run, And always reaching for more, But never quite sure what we wanted it for, tell me . . . Where do we go from here, Where do we go from here, When its not as easy as it first appeared, Tell me where do we go from here, Tell me where do we go from here. When the two roads diverge in the wood tell me how will you choose, Will your heart know the answer or will you still be searching for clues. An unfinished life grows more precious with each passing year, Days we once wasted so freely now seem so dear, Its as if we’re still up in that old oak tree paralyzed by fear, And it seems that when the last curtain falls, We’ll be asking that same question after it all, tell me . . Where do we go from here, Where do we go from here, When its not as easy as it first appeared, Tell me where do we go from here, Tell me where do we go from here.

Put Your Shoulder to the Plow ©2007 Doug Spears Red states think they’re righteous, Blue states think they’re smart, Both sides got too much mouth and damned too little heart, They should be ashamed, Bitch and moan and point and blame, Now if you don’t like the crops they’re plantin’ round here boy, Put your shoulder to the plow. Some say that the man is evil, Some say that he’s a saint, They way they’re spinnin’ it we’ll never know what he is and what he ain’t, Just rant and rave, Anger feeding hate cradle to the grave, Now if you don’t like the crops they’re plantin’ round here boy, Put your shoulder to the plow. You know when truth ain’t truth and facts ain’t facts it’s so hard to decide, You’re gonna have to figure out for yourself which horse you’re gonna ride. Everybody’s talkin’ ‘bout freedom, And preachin’ ‘bout people’s rights, But nobody’s talkin’ ‘bout what it costs, you know freedom’s got a price, Freedom just ain’t free, And the ones that are gonna pay are you and me, Now if you don’t like the crops they’re plantin’ round here boy, Put your shoulder to the plow. You know when truth ain’t truth and facts ain’t facts it’s so hard to decide, You’re gonna have to figure out for yourself which horse you’re gonna ride. Christian soldiers march for Jesus, ‘Cause they say he’s the only way, While the Muslims are calling for a holy war and they say there’ll be hell to pay, And people gonna die, In the name of heaven can you tell me why, Now if you don’t like the crops they’re plantin’ round here boy, Put your shoulder to the plow.

Marker 26 ©2007 Doug Spears At the mouth of the river, Sunrise to sundown, Just a beat up old pontoon boat with bait traps scattered ‘round Marker 26 sure ain’t anything like Park Place, But that’s where Bonnie’s found her heart and a special kind of grace. Bonnie was a sculptor, a rising New York star, Her pieces sold for a tidy price, it seemed that she’s go far, But the New York life wore Bonnie thin and she moved back south to stay, Then a storm blew through in ‘93 and swept it all away. Nothing left of her life’s work, too late to start again, So her hands turned to a simple trade and set her soul to mend, She found herself in the sacrifice and she found herself in the fear, And she found herself in a courage that would dry away her tears. At the mouth of the river, Sunrise to sundown, Just a beat up old pontoon boat with bait traps scattered ‘round Marker 26 sure ain’t anything like Park Place, But that’s where Bonnie’s found her heart and a special kind of grace. Life ain’t always easy and life ain’t always hard, It sure as hell ain’t always fair and you’re bound to get some scars, Bonnie’s surely had her share of tragedies and trials, And she’s learned its not how far you’ve come, its what you’ve done with the miles. At the mouth of the river, Sunrise to sundown, You’ll find a beat up old pontoon boat just hangin’ around, Marker 26 sure ain’t anything like Park Place, But that’s where Bonnie’s found her heart and a special kind of grace. Island Bait at Marker 26, and Bonnie’s special kind of grace.

Let’s Grow Old Together ©2007 Doug Spears Let’s grow old together, The way that old lover’s do, Let’s watch the sun go down upon, Lives lived fairly and true. Like the ones that you see on the sidewalks, Arm in arm taking the air, Holding hands and making plans, With a rhythm only old lovers share. Let’s grow old together, The way that old lover’s do, Let’s watch the sun go down upon, Lives lived fairly and true. Like the ones that you see in the winter, Cuddled up against the chill, Undying desire like a warm glowing fire, Fueled by dreams yet to fulfill. Let’s grow old together, The way that old lover’s do, Let’s watch the sun go down upon, Lives lived fairly and true. There’s a magic shared by old lovers, When two hearts beat on as one, There’s nothing to fear from all the years, When there’s so much joy still to come. Let’s grow old together, The way old lover’s do, Let’s watch the sun go down upon, Lives lived fairly and true. Let’s watch the sun go down upon, Lives lived fairly and true.

How’d You Know ©2007 Doug Spears I didn’t know the answers and the questions weren’t too clear, So how’d you know, oh baby how’d you know, I’d gone the wrong direction and I was lost without a clue, So how’d you know, oh baby how’d you know. How’d you know that the fool I was was not the man I’d be, How’d you know the changes they would come if you’d wait patiently, Oh how’d you know, tell me please oh how you know, baby how’d you know Like a feather in a hurricane I’d spun out of control, So how’d you know, oh baby how’d you know, No idea where I’d go or what I’d try to do, So how’d you know, oh baby how’d you know, How’d you know that the fool I was was not the man I’d be, How’d you know the changes they would come if you’d wait patiently, Oh how’d you know, tell me please oh how you know, baby how’d you know How could you find a ray of hope in what I had become, How did you find the courage and the strength to let love overcome. Looking back I can’t believe the storms we made it through, So how’d you know, oh baby how’d you know. How’d you know that the fool I was was not the man I’d be, How’d you know the changes they would come if you’d wait patiently, Oh how’d you know, tell me please oh how you know, baby how’d you know
